Professor Sally Male
The University of Melbourne
One of Australia’s leading researchers in engineering education, Sally Male has led major projects on industry engagement in engineering education, gender inclusion in engineering workplace learning, and curriculum development.
Sally is Professor of Engineering and Technology Education, and Director of the Teaching and Learning Laboratory, in the Faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of Melbourne. The Lab is the first of its kind in Australia. In the Lab, Sally has established a team combining experience and research in engineering and technology education, guiding research-informed enhancements to teaching and learning.
Before joining the University of Melbourne, Sally held the Chair in Engineering Education at The University of Western Australia. Sally taught electrical and electronic engineering design subjects in which students worked on projects offered and co-supervised by industry, finding herself frequently envious of their exciting opportunities. Sally also delighted in the extraordinary levels of critical thinking demonstrated by the final year students who completed research projects related to engineering practice, several of whom presented at AAEE conferences.
Sally is Editor-in-Chief of the Australasian Journal of Engineering Education. Under her leadership, the Journal has climbed to Q1, providing a trusted platform for the exchange of Australasian as well as international research.
A Fellow of Engineers Australia, Sally is grateful to have twice received the Engineers Australia Medal from the WA Division, for promoting the profession through industry engagement in engineering education and through initiatives to improve gender inclusion.
